The Sun
The Sun is the biggest star in the Solar System and is located in the center of it. It is similar in terms of composition when compared to other stars. Its mass constitutes more than 99% of the Solar System.

Before the planets were formed, the Solar System was a large cloud of gas and dust. This cloud then segregated to form the planets, asteroids and comets. The Sun was formed in the centre of the Solar System and burst into flames, thereby giving it a very high temperature.

In ancient times, the Sun was worshipped and considered to be a special and unique part of the Solar System. Over the years, it was established that this is not the case and that it is as ordinary as the rest of the stars in the Universe.

Interestingly, this large ball of fire has a number of cool spots on the surface. These are called Sun spots. However, they are not cool enough to allow life to enter. Sun spots are dark in color and are visible through astronomical equipment.

At times, there is a frenzy of solar activity on the Sun due to which plasma and gas are released into the atmosphere. These solar flares can be very powerful. If they come in contact with the magnetic field which surrounds Earth, beautiful light is emitted.
